According to tradition, a church dedicated to St Michael the Archangel, was built close to a safe crossing point on the river Wyre. It is mentioned in the Doomsday survey of 1086. Since the 12th century the names of the church and river have been combined and the village has become known as St Michaels- on Wyre.

The patronage was in the hands of the Crown until the reign of James 1st. Since 1789 the advowson has been held by the Hornby family. The names of the Rectors and Vicars since 1203 can be seen on a board on the south wall of the tower.

The church was reconstructed in the 15th century, although parts of it date back to the 13th century or earlier. The tower was added in 1549 and the vestry before 1825.

Up to 1753 the year started on the 25th March. To avoid confusion the months have been given the same numbers as now so Jan, Feb Mar to 24th are listed as 1,2,3, but are actually 10,11,12 of their year and Mar to Dec are listed as 3-12 as now but actually 1-9 of their year. From 1753 the year starts on 1st January.
