This townland is 5km SE of Ballynahinch near the Downpatrick road. Ordnance Survey Map Ref 21: 40/51 .It comprises 904 acres. I have seen early references to a family from Kilmore with both the Conagher & Connor spellings.

Email me for a map of Drumnaconnor dated 1830 & 1863. There is a map of 1730 (Hiberniae Delineatio) of Lecale district with only major places mentioned and includes Dromonticonor just north of Kilmore. The lakes appear to be important features (LM1999 p93)

There are four roads through this townland. The Drumnaconagher Road from Teconnaught to Raleagh. The Cumber Road, from the Downpatrick Road to Drumnaconagher Road. The Ballynahinch to Crossgar Road and the road from the Drumnaconagher Road near to Drumaghlis ending at the Ballynahinch to Crossgar Road.
The Cumber Road was known in olden times as the Rocky Road to Dublin. It was main road from Comber to Dublin. Then it was known as Rocks Road then Cumber Road. (B McC)

Drumnaconnor (my choice of spelling) was originally held by the McCartens, Phelemy then Patrick in 1641 (PNDI) then 387 acres was held by Ever Magenis in 1657 (Down Survey map 1657) .Along with Raleagh, they were granted by the Commonwealth by right of conquest and law of arms, to Lieut. Col. James Trail of Tullychin in Killyleagh parish, who had rendered active service in the suppression of the 1641 Rebellion. There is a Deed dated 25 May 1657 & 15 Feb 1657 whereby Cornelius & Samuel Rock, troopers in the L.D. Fleetwood's troop of horse , sold the townland (except for 12 acres of Demesne) to Lt. Col. James Trail for £80. (PNDI) After his death, Drumnaconnor & Raleagh passed to his younger son, Hans. Hans died in Dublin in 1692 leaving his 'corn-mill and tuck-mill' to his eldest son, James. (KPC p 12,19) Rev. Hamilton Trail of Killinchy owned the townland in 1770. Rev. Trail put Drumnaconnor in the hands of Rev. James Mant, Lord Bishop of Down & Connor & Rev. James Hamilton Clewlow in Sept 1775 proper to its sale to Alexander Stewart of Newtownards in Dec 1775 for approx. £3600. (Leases /Deeds LDS film #530913) Other part landlords listed in Freeholders Records were Lord Londonderry (1789) & Marchioness of Downshire (1818) . Click here for sale notice of 15 Jun 1764 for 293 acres by Rev. Hamilton Trail. .

In 1836 there were 3 mills belonging to J. Hill Silcock (see below for a photo) one a corn mill, had the diameter of the wheel 17 feet, another a flax mill ,diameter of the wheel 13 feet and another flax mill with a wheel diameter of 14 feet. There was not a sufficiency of water for any of these mills to work in the summer season. There is a small, very ancient bridge called Lyons Bridge which has one arch 66 feet by 9 feet from one buttress to the other. The arch is almost covered in ivy. There is another bridge over the same water (Ballynahinch River) , the dimension from one buttress to another 129 feet by 20 feet with 2 arches. It also is very old and was repaired in 1833 at the expense of the county.

The main road from Ballynahinch to Downpatrick passes through the townland but it was not in very good order in 1836. The average width was 24 feet and in some places it was dangerously narrow, not exceeding 18 feet in width and when it crosses a bog, the road was raised about 3 feet, without fences at either side.

The Ordnance Survey Memoirs also comment that the farmers appeared to be quiet and industrious. The farms, generally speaking, had a degree of cleanliness about them and that showed that some attention has been paid to their individual comfort. Their diet was strong and good. The farmhouses were mostly thatched but there were many exceptions. The crops were generally in the haggard by the last of October.

The earliest farming families in the area with continuous residence were the Carvills,Greens, Kellys, Marners, Montgomerys Silcocks & Savages with the Stewarts being the major land owners. The other families moved into Drumnaconnor at various times from neighbouring townlands in the parish or from parishes surrounding Kilmore. The Kerrs possibly moved from Broclough whilst still retaining the lease on the land there.

There were 10 new farming families between 1830 & 1864 showing a reasonably transient population. Those replaced could have been evicted for non payment of rent ( the famine years) and those replacing them could have been younger sons from nearby, wanting their own land to farm but still within easy travelling distance to their parents and wider family or they could have been workers at the mill. Between 1864 and 1911 there were 25 new families into the neighbourhood. Most of the farm servants mentioned in the 1911 Census were from families within the parish.

News:
12th January 1839; The Effects of the Big Storm.
At Kilmore: Kilmore and its vicinity have suffered severely from the storm of Sunday night last, houses unroofed, some totally and others partially; several families had to leave their houses and expose themselves almost naked to the "pelting of the pitiless storm." One family especially, with a child unwell and the wife a short time confined had to leave their house and remain exposed to the inclemency of the weather. Rademon Wood has suffered much; one would think that the woodman had set his mark on every large fir and laid it prostrate on the ground; trees that have stood the blast for ages are laid low. One of the pinnacles lately erected on the church tower was blown down and carried through the roof of the Church. A person of the name Carvill, who lives convenient to the church, had his stable blown down and a fine mare much injured with its fall. Scarcely a stack-yard in the neighbourhood but had its contents laid prostrate or scattered to the winds. Lissara flax mill is totally unroofed.

12th September 1874 page 2
On Thursday last, a fire broke out on the premises of Mr. Samuel MONTGOMERY of Drumnatticonnor burning to the ground the bleach mill, now used as office-houses, the upper floor of which was filled with a large amount of unscutched flax, grass seed , flaxseed etc.

1st May 1880 page 2- Infanticide at Drumnatticonnor (Down Recorder newspaper)
Samuel McVeigh found the body in the bog of a child aged 6 weeks. It is estimated that the body had been in the water 8-10 months.
There was a fatal ice accident on the frozen mill-race at Silcock's corn & flax mill, 1 Feb 1870-DR (The boys skitted across the ice to chase geese and fell in- B McC)

According to the 1901 Census there were 73 males & 81 females living in this townland with 119 Catholics , 6 Church of Ireland & 24 Presbyterians. There were 47 dwellings.

According to the 1911 Census, there were 49 dwellings/families listed with 100 males & 110 females living in this townland. 136 Catholics; 7 Church of Ireland; 57 Presbyterians & 10 other denominations.
