Surnames of Co. Down: Chambers

. . Name . Parish Information Reference
CHAMBERS family . came over from Ayrshire, Scotland with James Hamilton in 1606 PE
. . CHAMBERS . . originally De Camera which in French means 'in judge's chambers'; changed to Chambers after Norman Conquest of Britain in 1066 LM 1986 p28
. . CHAMBERS . . There are actually several origins for Chambers in the British Isles. "De Camera" or "La Chambre" came from the French/Norman invasion. Chamberlain to Chambers is of British origin from an occupational title. Chambers from Chalmers came from a soldier of fortune in Clan Cameron who fought for the French. The most important one for Counties Down and Antrim is from Kintyre and Islay, their closest neighbors in Scotland.
The name MacAmbrose was alglicized to MacCambridge. The family name got changed once again to Chambers when they emigrated to Ulster. Counties Down and Antrim were not part of the official Plantation. However, they were also settled by Scots although that settlement started before the Plantation. Actually, there was a lot of "cross polination" between Ulster and the Argylles over the centuries.
I'm hoping some Chambers from County Down will take a DNA test. We have a rare opportunity to show that our Chambers Family is unique and different from most others. If you're interested, please contact Tim
